Same here.. The VGZ seems to be affected more than the VGE though. I think this has to do with the custom clock speed settings in the "informations" tab. Changing to NTSC and setting the refresh rate to 55 Hz again helped a lot here. The default PAL clock speed settings seem to make the SN76489 sound horribly out of tune in comparison with the YM2612... o_O
Also awesome job on these. I really laughed at the monsquaz one..! :p

55? I've only ever seen 60Hz NTSC VGMs, and every PAL VGM I have plays fine in the most current version of vgmplay (I hardly ever use Winamp+in_vgm unless I want to super-customize a playlist or something).jrlepage wrote:Changing to NTSC and setting the refresh rate to 55 Hz...
Without actually looking at the VGMs, It's more likely the issue has to do w/the PSG's clock value itself instead of the refresh rate. I personally use 3579545Hz for the PSG unless otherwise noted, and recommend it for all NTSC-timed VGMs.

The VGM itself has the playback rate field set to 55 Hz, btw, so VGMPlay always plays it at that rate. (I just remembered that I forgot a PlaybackRate entry in its .ini file.)
In in_vgm it'll play with the correct speed, if you selected "Recorded rate".
The VGM has a bad sample count/loop count, btw. It says that the VGM is 1:55 long, but it's only 1:45.
Also it seems that VGMMM uses PAL clock speeds. (and the YM2612/PSG volume balance is different, too)
Here's a fixed VGM.
Other files with faulty headers: djtBMX_gentrktest2.vgz, monsquazmode-fixed2.vgz
Simply running vgm_ptch -Check File.vgz fixes them.
MaliceX: Your VGMs are very nice. Especially harmonious amamam and Starry Emotion.

Did the PAL Megadrive sound so out of tune? o.o
Also the FM/PSG balance can be altered in VGMMM, hence my inquiry about single-chip output control on IRC yesterday. :) The program also lets you choose between PAL and NTSC clock speeds.

No problem. Here's the (excessively accurate :P) list of tools I used:MaliceX wrote:(Just curious what tools were involved in the process?)
- gzip - to decompress the VGZ files
- VGM Music Maker - to compare the edited VGMs with the original file and to get PAL chip clocks
- Windows Calculator - to convert the clock values from dec to hex
- Hex Workshop 2.54 - for editing the files
Some PC98 conversions to PAL Megadrive mark II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr5-2-w5eRE

After hacking around with the VGMPlay source code among other tools, this was managed.
