Retro sound chips appreciation page

Post by Alianger »

Here's something I've been adding to for the past few months. Let me know if I've missed anything good (preferably from a game) or if you have any other thoughts on the page. For example I could add some specific track recommendations to the top tier OSTs or if anyone has anything they want said about a particular OST, their comments on it. When it comes to the layout, weebly doesn't allow for much it seems (it's also pretty buggy) and I'm not very experienced, but suggestions are welcome.

I recently added a "by year" page as it was suggested to help highlight earlier efforts. Covers 1980-1990 for now.

I'll possibly add Roland MT-32 and/or SNES pages as well. The former is partially synth-based (linear arithmetic), and SNES has some unique effects along with pretty heavy limitations compared to say, PS1 or Saturn.

I've added a Roland MT-32 page:
http://minirevver.weebly.com/mt-32-music.html

A bit tricky to find good sources to link to for it and there's a bunch of OSTs not on YT yet, guess it was always kind of niche.

Nice selection!

Just a note, that Night City tune for AY3 is actually Six Miles High by Gasman of AY Riders (a Spectrum music group). Night City kinda ripped it off, and John attributed it wrongly because he didn’t know.

Also, maybe list the Konami SCC in the wavetable section? :D

Thanks for checking it out. :) I've updated the AY-3 page with that info.

It's a good point regarding the SCC chip, having it this way was kind of a leftover from before I added WT synth chips as a section.

I've added a page for 1992 (still tweaking it a bit): http://minirevver.weebly.com/impressive ... -year.html

As you can see, there are now SNES games in the yearly lists. I've added a WIP SNES page to the main page; only 1990-1992 for now though and no links yet.

I've added youtube top 30 playlists for some of the yearly lists (1984-1986 for now). Is this something people are interested in?
http://minirevver.weebly.com/vgm-1984.html

Also changed some layouts a bit; this will be the format for each chip's page:

Edit:

Oh, sorry about that. A YT search shows all of them, though not in correct order:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... gm+by+year

Or you can click each year from here and find a link on each page (1993 is WIP):
http://minirevver.weebly.com/impressive ... -year.html

Edit:
Latest updates:
-Added a page for 1993 (will be revising it a bit for the next couple of days)
-Added a (WIP) page for sound blaster sample-based music (mod music, streaming pcm, sample-based midi) in DOS games
-Added some OPL2 & 3 and X68K games

I've updated the SNES and SB pages and finished a first draft for the next yearly list, 1995. Will be editing it a bit over the next few days.

Another one down, three more to go. This year ended up relatively short, with only DOS gaming still going as strong as before out of the platforms I'm doing currently.

I think someone else might get through the entire list this time, it's been a while hehe.

the "good info" is the MAME source code. even if you don't understand the code, usually there's a comment in the beginning of the file with some information.
