weird PMD format

Post by tinyrsid »

I just came across some music files. here: https://modland.com/incoming/laboratory ... 20Collage/
and here: https://modland.com/incoming/laboratory/PMD/ which "supposedly" are somehow "PMD" related..

From what I see the files in both folders actually use the same format - but these are NOT "Professional Music Driver (PMD)" format files. The name of the text file in the "PMD" folder suggests that this might be somehow "PC Engine" related. But the name of the
other folder suggests that it is somehow "Piston Collage" related.

From what I see Studio Pixel's "PiyoPiyo player" (NOT Piston Collage) actually uses a format that uses "PMD" magic bytes in its header but the file format is totally different from the files in the above folders.

Any idea what format files are actually in the two folders and where to find a player?

Piston Collage (pxTone) is a chiptune tracker indeed developed by Studio Pixel (Cave Story). The extension is .ptcop.

This PMD format (.pmd) seems unrelated to the usual PMD/FMP files (.m/ovi). I have no clue what this is and how Modland estimated it was somehow related to the PC Engine, but I doubt it's a PCE tracker because the PCE community would have heard of it a long time ago.
