Does the YMF271 use FM?, it sounds like there's a little bit in these songs.Awesome soundtrack btw, much better than the home version.

The YMF271 can do both, FM and PCM. Every channel can be put into PCM or FM mode. (Every set of 4 channels can use one of these modes: 4op FM, 2x2op FM, 3op FM + 1x PCM and 4x PCM.)

So each channel acted as 1 operator ? So it could only do a max of 3x4op sounds or 6x2op sounds? Is this chip close to the YMF292?

There are 48 "slots" in total in groups of 12 channels with 4 slots each.
I don't know how close it is to the YMF292, but unlike it the YMF271 comes with built-in waveforms for FM.

I assume it was easier to use samples than to fiddle with FM, especially when many of the composers back then didn't really like FM and would have rather used real instruments (or close to it). It's ironic now because of the chiptune scene and all these new games using retro styled audio and graphics. :P

Yeah I know,I just wished game music continued to use FM.On the subject of stupid indie devs, they have been stuck in 8 bit land for too long. They need to step their game up, bring on the better graphics and the FM.

Sorry for bumping this really old post, but I'm having trouble playing this in Foobar2K, but yet other ones I've gotten from this site like Outrun work just fine. Is there a reason it wouldn't be working in this one?

Also, I don't know if this is the right place, but I'm new here if it's not I apologize.

If you're using foo_gep, then it probably doesn't support the YMF271 chip. foo_gep supports only some of the sound chips.
foo_input_vgm should be able to play all of them.
