How accurate is sound when played on a different chip?

For example, if I play a VGM from an YM2151 on a YMF262 ("OPL3") will it sound different than if played on the YM2151?

Some FM families (like OPM and OPL) have completely different characteristics, and the same note will not sound the same at all.
