FMP format - "composers"

Post by tinyrsid »

Hi,
I am going through an archive of FMP format (.OPI, .OVI, .OZI) files and notice that many of the "same" songs appear in the folders of different creators.

Example: The song "Feena" from the game "Ys 1" exists in versions by Guu, HypS and Ulk2 (etc).

What is going on here? Are those "fan" remakes of "famous" songs, or were those dudes employed by the game publisher to port respective songs
to other platforms? Just curious...

Cheers

Yes, many of them are fan covers. FMP/MDX were the Japanese equivalents of Amiga MOD.

ty. so far most of the stuff I heard seems to be game music (remakes)... which I find somewhat boring. Would you know which of the guys in that scene also did their own compositions?

I think most amateur Japanese composers directly worked on homebrew game titles. Quite different from the Amiga scene for example, where 99% of the musicians produced original compositions for demos or standalone music modules.

Though I do remember a few artists writing original music, like Shogun, Hally, Kid & Yantako, and some others using the pxTone chiptune tracker.
