Specifically the change was to standardize the sound chip descriptor so they would be categorized alongside all the other YM2203 packs on the site, because right now it has a sound chip category entirely to itself. We decided to handle this on the site backend instead, but that work hasn't started yet. There are four other packs that need to be updated, but those have other fixes applied to them, so I haven't done that yet. I might edit the update post to point that out later.
The same game with different sound card configurations is something that could admittedly be handled better, especially for later PC-98 games with YM2608 (for which multiple different sound cards with different ADPCM capabilities are available). AdLib Gold and SoundBlaster 16 might also qualify here?
The distinction between different YM2608 devices would indeed make sense on PC-98, because some soundtracks have specific arrangements for official and third-party hardware (games by May-Be Soft for example).
