Planet X3 is a real-time strategy game for
MS-DOS computers.
This game is proposed by The 8-Bit Guy.
Actually the music is also worth listening to.

So let me analyze the music composition of the
OPL2 version. First open these VGM music with
MDPlayer and enable the piano keyboard window,
you will find that although this group of music
uses FM sound source, it does not use the
hardware volume ADSR envelope at all (only uses
the software volume envelope), which looks very
PSG style of. None of the tracks use the OPL2
rhythm pattern, FM channels 1-3 are the melody
and channels 4-5 are the drums. Interesting is
the drum sound, as channel 4 sounds like a
Tom-tom drum when soloed and channel 5
resembles white noise. This is more similar to
PSG music.
On the other hand, some tracks also use fast
arpeggios, which are often characteristic of
SID or PSG series. For some reason the volume
decrement on some tracks doesn't sound very
smooth, which is too different from the FM
hardware volume envelope. This also results in
a very large VGM file, as the volume of the
music appears to be controlled "in real time".

At present, there are 3 versions of Planet X3
that can use VGM record:
OPL2, SN76489, PC-Speaker. But there is
actually a Covox version, because you can use
Covox to emulate the SN76489, and the sound
sounds very different from the SN76489 version,
like the SN76489 with a reduced frequency.
Actually Covox can also emulate OPL2, but these
two formats can only be recorded in waveform,
which doesn't seem to make much sense.

This pack was made using DOSBOX 0.74 VGM Mod.
