MAME 0.244 (modded by Valley Bell)
"Real Bout Fatal Fury", arriving mere months
after "Fatal Fury 3", reuses code and assets
from that game, but overhauls the gameplay to
the point of feeling like a whole different
game. The control scheme is changed, there's
more of an emphasis on rushing down your
opponent, and it's a more hectic game in
general. It provides the blueprint for "Real
Bout Fatal Fury Special", which builds upon the
fast-paced gameplay established here.
The soundtrack largely reuses the music from
"Fatal Fury 3", to the point the reused music
even has the same sound IDs, but there are
multiple tracks exclusive to this game, most
obviously the added characters' themes, as well
as the intro music, cutscene music and ending
music. This pack nonetheless includes fresh
logs of all of the reused music from "Fatal
Fury 3" for the sake of completeness.
Notes on oddities:
* There are two sound IDs that play the Neo-Geo
Opening Theme and two IDs that run the player
select music. While it's unclear why the
Neo-Geo Opening Theme occurs twice, the
second instance of "Hitchhike" is located
where the second player select theme
("Freemason") was in "Fatal Fury 3", and so
it was probably done for simplicity reasons.
* Duck King's theme has noticeable clicking
throughout. This is audible even in the
official OST album, and is caused by an error
in the drum loop sample running throughout
the track. Both "Real Bout Fatal Fury
Special" and "Real Bout Fatal Fury 2" reuse
this track directly, and in neither case is
this fixed.
* The Japanese tags come direct from the OST
album, which features alternate romanizations
(writing "Sokaku" as "Soukaku" and using
kunrei-shiki instead of Hepburn like the game
does, e.g. "Chonsyu") and outright typos
("Haward") that are preserved in these tags
but not in the English set.
